SEOUL (2019)
The thirteenth MYLP was held in Seoul, South Korea under the topic of “Nomad Entrepreneurship: Building a Global Start-Up” on 21-24 November 2019. The program was attended by 12 outstanding and talented young professionals and students who all had the opportunity to work and present on business school style case studies on Mongolian start-ups. During the program, the participants met with a range of tech start-ups operating in the energy, communications and healthcare spaces to learn about their experiences. The participants also attended a panel discussion with the leaders of successful start-ups including Steppe Group, Truss Korea and Tanker Fund. MYLP Seoul ended with a networking event with the local community of young professionals in Seoul. The participants thoroughly enjoyed working on the first ever MYLP case studies and the discussions with the impressive start-up leaders!
NEW YORK (2019)
The 12th MYLP held in New York city with the topic of “Social Enterprise and Impact”
We welcomed 7 exceptionally bright young professionals and university students out of 80+ applications received from across the US, Canada, Europe and Mongolia to the MYLN family.
Program had a full day of market leading speakers followed by day and a half of 17 unique social enterprise pitches by the participants with bonding events. We met with the leaders of impact investing, thought leaders in education and social enterprise founders who shared their experiences and opinions. One aspect we did differently from all previous MYLPs was to have the participants pitch their original Social Enterprise ideas, which highlighted the intellect, passion and diversity of thought.
Our participants also integrated with the broader Network and NYC area young professionals with a public networking event, bonding dinners, and closing happy hour.
PRAGUE (2019)
The eleventh MYLP was held in Prague, Czech Republic under the topic of “The Road to Ulaanbaatar 2030” on 29 March – 1 April 2019. During the program, 10 young professionals and students from Austria, Italy, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Mongolia came together to discuss their vision for Ulaanbaatar and sustainable solutions for achieving it. Participants met industry leaders, visited architecturally significant landmarks and worked on case studies of sustainable city initiatives. The teams presented on different initiatives involving housing and community, urban mobility and waste management. During the program, participants also visited the Embassy of Mongolia of the Czech Republic and held a Mongolian Community Networking Event.
MONGOLIA (2019)
The tenth MYLP was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia under the topic of “Energy and Power: Road to Sustainable Future” on 25-26th January 2019. The program commenced with a speaker series which included professionals and academics in the energy sector. The participants had the opportunity to discuss and share their views and ideas with these leaders in their respective fields. Next was a highly productive panel discussion moderated by one of our MYLN members. The panel also comprised of professionals in the energy sector and the participants were able to learn from their differing perspectives. Mark Koenig, the Country Representative of the Asia Foundation, our main sponsor, visited the participants during the program and shared Asia Foundation’s vision for Mongolia. Discussions of the possible collaboration between MYLP and Asia Foundation also took place. After the discussions and presentations from the speakers, the participants got to apply their learnings to practical problems by attending a workshop where they had to come up with a pitch idea for the Green Climate Fund. For the second day of the program, the participants went on a site tour of Salkhit Wind Park and learned more about the project. The program concluded with a post program networking event involving all speakers, sponsors and participants. The participants were able to reflect on the program and share their experiences.
SILICON VALLEY (2015)
10th Mongolian Young Leaders Program under the topic "THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN MONGOLIA’S DEVELOPMENT" which will take place in SILICON VALLEY, CALIFORNIA on NOVEMBER 13-14, 2015. The program brought together 16-18 distinguished Mongolian young leaders from diverse academic backgrounds to discuss how technology and entrepreneurship can reduce our dependence on the volatile mining industry and further accelerate Mongolia’s socio-economic development.
In the recent past, we have witnessed disruptive technologies rapidly transforming how people are informed, communicate, and make friends, how leaders make decisions, and how businesses deliver goods and services. Innovation and advancement in technology are drastically changing the dynamics of competition among businesses and nations. Top 5 of 10 most valuable brands in the world now are technology companies.
Silicon Valley has been the epicenter of innovation and is pulling the best talents, revolutionary ideas, and billions of investments to itself like a black hole. Tech companies in Silicon Valley are now worth over $3 trillion, and just last year, venture capital firms in the U.S. invested over $48 billion for new tech ideas. Policy makers and business leaders all around the world are trying to imitate and establish their own Silicon Alley, Silicon Steppe, and Silicon Fen.
Members of our Mongolian Young Leaders Network and other Mongolian professionals, who will be the guest speakers during MYLP, are already working in some of the top Silicon Valley tech companies, start-ups, and VC firms. Participants will visit the headquarters of Facebook, Google, and Start-up incubators to meet our guest speakers at work. MYLP in Silicon Valley is a great opportunity for Mongolia’s best minds to meet and network with one another, learn from the industry leaders, exchange their opinion and ideas, and inspire one another to become the intellectual leaders and entrepreneurs.
LONDON (2015)
The eighth MYLP in London, UK was held under the topic of "Agribusiness Development in Mongolia" between Oct 22-25, 2015. The program started with a private meeting with Lord Bowness from House of Lords and MP James Gray from House of Commons at the UK’s Houses of Parliament. During the meeting, they discussed about the current state of UK’s public policy, and the EU agricultural legislations and implications. It was then followed by a lecture at the London School of Economics by Rachel Kyte, a World Bank Group Vice President and Special Envoy for Climate Change, on how to transition to a zero carbon and resilient economy. On the second day, the participants had the opportunity to visit and tour European Development for Reconstruction and Development (“EBRD”) headquarters in London, where their Agribusiness team gave a presentation on EBRD’s investment strategies in Mongolia. On the same day, a panel discussion was held at Asia House, where the Mongolian Ambassador to United Kingdom, H.E Tulga Narkhuu, gave an opening remark. On the final day of the program, participants had a field trip to a mixed-use traditional English farm, hosted by the farm owner Ms. Virginia. The young leaders learned the operational side of farming: food safety regulations and implications, product distributions to retail stores, organic practices for livestock farming.
NEW YORK (2014)
The seventh MYLP was organized in New York, NY at the Columbia University campus, during April 3-5, 2014 under the topic of “Prudent Public Financing Management”. With a belief that public finance has its implications on all sectors and is crucial for Mongolia’s development, we brought together 18 outstanding Mongolian students from a diverse set of studies to discuss the different views and thoughts around the topic. The Program was organized under the auspices of the President of Mongolia. The Program consisted of a panel discussion, distinguished guest speakers, series of group presentations, participatory sessions, and visits to the Permanent Mission of Mongolia, United Nations, Revenue Watch Institute that other relevant organizations in order to cultivate thoughtful discussions and intellectual exchange of ideas about the future of public finance in Mongolia. Furthermore, participants visited exciting attractions in the vibrant city of New York. It was a great opportunity for fellow Mongolian students to meet and network with one another, exchange their views and opinions, and to become a part of the growing Mongolian Young Leaders Network.
VANCOUVER (2013)
The sixth MYLP was organized in Vancouver, Canada during November 22nd – 24th, 2013 by MonAme Center with the cooperation of the Honorary Consul of Mongolia to British Columbia, Canada and the support of the Embassy of Mongolia in Canada and the Embassy of Canada in Mongolia. Major topics of discussion were Mongolian foreign policy, Canada-Mongolia relations and its future, the state of Mongolian economy and future plans, mining sector, and health assessment plans following the development of Turquoise Hill Mine. Leadership training and educational sessions, and public event about the future of Canada-Mongolia relations, which brought over a hundred participants, were notable highlights of the program. The participants also toured the TRIUMF Particle Physics Facility, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology and a tour of Vancouver city. MYLP 2013 in Vancouver, Canada was made possible with the generous sponsorship from Deloitte Onch Mongolia LLC and Turquoise Hill Resources.
ISTANBUL (2011)
The fifth MYLP was organized in Istanbul, Turkey during March 5th-8th, 2011 under the topic of “Urban Mongolia.” The program was organized under the auspices of President of Mongolia who sent his warm greetings and which became possible with the support of MonAme Center, Embassy of republic of Turkey in Mongolia, Embassy of Mongolia in Turkey, Honorary Consulate of Mongolia Participants assessed and discussed the challenges and opportunities faced in the City of Ulaanbaatar, with the backdrop of Istanbul City. The topic of MYLP Istanbul 2011, “Urban Mongolia,” was addressed in two separate subtopics. The First topic, “Urban Planning,” addressed the physical infrastructure of Ulaanbaatar, learning from 8500 years long history of Istanbul, and the second topic, “Cultural Consumption,” assessed the soft side of urban life in Ulaanbaatar city. MYLP 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey was made possible with the generous sponsorship from PwC Mongolia, Asia Pacific Investment Partners and Liberty Partners LLC.
BOSTON (2011)
The fourth MYLP was successfully organized on April 8-9, 2011 in Boston, MA. Mongolian students from various universities across the United States were selected to participate in the program. The MIT Mongolian Students Association and Harvard Mongolian Society jointly organized this program.
The theme of MYLP 2011 was “The Impacts and Implications of the Growing Natural Resource Sector in Mongolia.” The guest speakers were Nazli Choucri, Professor of Political Science at MIT, Louis T. Wells, Professor of International Management at Harvard Business School, and Richard Lester, Head of Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT. Our guest speakers shared their views on sustainability, investment, and resource management in developing economies, and discussed with the participants about current Mongolian development in respect to global challenges.
MILAN (2010)
Following the success of MYLP in the U.S., the program was expanded to Europe in 2010 and was successfully organized in Milan, Italy under the topic of “Mongolia 2030.” Twenty distinguished Mongolian students from the top European universities in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Bulgaria, Turkey, Czech Republic, and Switzerland. The program was organized in cooperation of the Honorary Consulate of Mongolia in Milan, and with support from the Mongolian Embassy in Austria and the Zorig Foundation. The program was hosted by the Italian-Mongolian Business Council, and the initiative received support from the then President of Mongolia, Elbegdorj Tsakhia.
The Italian-Mongolian Business Council, Altagamma foundation and other participating organizations gave talks and presentations on the Italian economy and on ways to strengthen the Mongolian-Italian relations. During the two-day program, students enjoyed numerous informative networking opportunities such as meeting with the local business, commerce and education sector representatives, and visiting local factories and firms.
SAN FRANCISCO (2010)
The second MYLP was organized in San Francisco, CA, at the Stanford University Campus, during April 9-10, 2010 under the topic of ‘International Security, Sustainable Development, and Entrepreneurship.’ The program was co-organized with the Mongolian Cultural Association at Stanford University, with support from the MonAme Center.
Participants attended seminars on nuclear non-proliferation, environmental issues at Sierra Club in San Francisco, and visited the Asia Foundation, and attended a talk by a VP at Cisco. A network building team activity was organized to enhance communication and brainstorm ideas for the development of Mongolia. The idea for Mongolian Young Scholars program was first conceived at one of the brainstorming sessions and was implemented successfully in consequent years in Mongolia by Tana Jambaldorj and other participants of MYLP.
WASHINGTON DC (2009)
The first Mongolian Young Leaders Program (MYLP) took place on March 23-24, 2009 in Washington DC, USA.
The program was initiated by the Mongolian-American (MonAme) Scientific Research Center and co-organized with the Embassy of Mongolia to USA. The program was also partially sponsored by the North-America Mongolia Business Council and the Zorig Foundation USA. The nine fellows of the program were a select group of Mongolian students matriculated in the leading US universities. The goal of the program was to provide an opportunity for the student-fellows to meet with one another, exchange their views and opinions about present and future of democracy and development of Mongolia and to motivate the fellows to aspire to become future political, intellectual, and business leaders of Mongolia.
